Modeling the Break-Up of ATV-1 "Jules Verne"

The aerothermally and aerodynamically induced destruction of ATV during its targeted re-entry has been extensively analyzed with ESA's SCARAB software (Spacecraft Atmospheric Re-Entry and Aerothermal Break-Up). SCARAB performs an analysis of the satellite's orbit and attitude motion, and of its break-up under changing aerodynamic, aerothermal, thermal, and structural loading conditions during a re-entry. The software generates detailed protocols and summary results of the break-up sequence, the resulting fragmentation tree, and demising or surviving objects. Properties of objects reaching the Earth surface (e.g. cross-section, mass, velocity) can be used for casualty risk assessments.
