Jules Verne (ATV-1) Reentry Multi-instrument Aircraft Campaign

The early August reentry of ESA's Automated Transfer Vehicle "Jules Verne" will be a destructive reentry. The fragementation of ATV is due to aerothermal loads that are predicted from numerical models (e.g., SCARAB). The possible explosive events from disruption of the fuel tank are poorly understood and considerable uncertainty remains in the modelling. Observation of the reentry is crucial to enhance the accuracy and confidence of reentry safety assessments for subsequent ATV-1 reentries, by providing data on the time and altitude of explosive and fragmentation events along the entry trajectory. In this presentation, the planned Multi-Instrument Aircraft Campaign (MAC) is introduced and its mission objectives described.
